Atutur General Hospital
Blood transfusion is a life-saving procedure that carries inherent risks, categorized as immediate or delayed. This session focuses on understanding these hazards, including acute reactions like hemolytic reactions, allergic/anaphylactic reactions, TRALI, and TACO, as well as delayed reactions such as delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions, TA-GvHD, iron overload, and alloimmunization. The importance of the Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT) scheme and hemovigilance is highlighted for ensuring transfusion safety through detection, reporting, investigation, and corrective actions. Effective transfusion safety relies on the active participation and shared responsibility of clinicians, lab staff, and nurses across the entire transfusion chain.
