Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a spectrum of inflammatory disorders affecting the upper female genital tract, often resulting from sexually transmitted bacteria such as Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Risk factors include prior PID, bacterial vaginosis, multiple sexual partners, and young age. Clinical presentation features cervical motion tenderness, adnexal tenderness, fever, and abnormal vaginal discharge. Diagnosis relies on pelvic examination, laboratory tests, imaging, and sometimes laparoscopy. Management includes recommended antibiotic regimens and guidance on follow‑up, with attention to complications such as infertility and chronic pelvic pain.
