Nature Reviews Cardiology
Venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, is a major cause of vascular death and non-fatal complications worldwide. This review presents a global summary of the incidence and outcomes of VTE, based on a collaborative multinational effort. The data reveal considerable geographical differences in incidence rates, with reliable data primarily from Northern America, Western Europe, and Oceania. The article emphasizes the need for improved data collection in underrepresented regions, particularly in Africa and Asia.
